ATMs In China Found To Circulate Fake Money

Fake money scams are as common as a $5 bill. However, with the advances in technology, such scams usually end up in failure. Not in China, however, where counterfeit bills are so well-made that they are able to fool even the ATM machines.

ATM machine

The case has been reported by a group of Japanese exchange students. Apparently, these students withdrew 3,000 yuan from a local bank’s ATM, but once they had the money, they realized that several of the notes were counterfeit.

As soon as they discovered this anomaly, they contacted the bank, citing the counterfeit bills and demanding explanation. However, the bank refused to take any responsibility and dismissed their report.

It is interesting to note here that the allegedly counterfeit notes were withdrawn from an ATM. This essentially means that whoever created the counterfeit bills was able to fool not only the bank personnel but also the ATMs. This is probably the first of such scams where an ATM machine has been fooled into serving out fake bills to customers who withdraw money from it.

However, we must take this report with a pinch of salt. For now, only one such incident has occurred and until similar reports are cited elsewhere in China, it would appear that this is an isolated incident.
