SpaceX’s Grasshopper rocket is 100 feet tall. It consists of a Falke 9 rocket first stage tank, a Merlin 1D engine, four steel and aluminum landing legs with hydraulic dampers, and a steel support structure. SpaxeX has been testing the rocket since September 2012. It is designed to launch and land vertically on its metal legs.
After testing the reusable rocket last year from September to December, SpaceX made another test with the rocket last Thursday on March 7. Grasshopper blasted off form its launch pad, hovered in the air for about 34 seconds, reached 262.8 feet (80 meters) above the ground and made a new record (reaching 131 feet or 40 meters, Grasshopper made last record in December), and finally returned to its own launch pad safely. Here is the video.
