Google Acquires Connected Device Company Nest For A $3.2 Billion Deal

Google is in the process of acquiring the connected device company Nest. The deal will rake in $3.2 billion in cash and Google gets to acquire the technology behind Nest and employ its founders, Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers.

Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers are known heavy-weights in the tech industry. Rogers was among the pioneering members of the engineering team of Apple‘s iPhone while Fadell was among the key persons who turned Apple’s iPod from an idea into a reality.

The duo has long since left Apple and been nurturing their own company, the very same Nest which Google has now acquired. Nest has dished out a number of smart products in the recent past, including the Protect smoke alarm and an intelligent thermostat. The company essentially worked on creating connected devices and ultimately, pushing towards the notion of smart homes.

Google apparently has a similar vision, which is why Fadell and Rogers seem quite happy with the deal. This is manifest in Fadell’s comments over the acquisition, “Google will help us fully realize our vision of the conscious home and allow us to change the world faster than we ever could if we continued to go it alone. We’ve had great momentum, but this is a rocket ship. Google has the business resources, global scale and platform reach to accelerate Nest growth across hardware, software and services for the home globally. And our company visions are well aligned – we both believe in letting technology do the hard work behind the scenes so people can get on with the things that matter in life.”

Google’s CEO Larry Page has expressed similar sentiments in his own statement regarding the Nest acquisition. According to him, “They’re already delivering amazing products you can buy right now–thermostats that save energy and smoke/CO alarms that can help keep your family safe. We are excited to bring great experiences to more homes in more countries and fulfill their dreams!”

It is of significance to note here that Google itself has tinkered with smart thermostats in the past. The company may combine its vision with the genius and technology behind Nest to help realize the goal of smart, fully connected and aware homes.
