During Samsung’s CES 2013 keynote, Microsoft also took the stage for a while. The company showed up a new display technology which apparently projects images and lights all across a given environment, rather than confining it to a screen. The company has dubbed the technology ‘Illumiroom.’
This is how Illumiroom works. Imagine a video where it is raining. The technology essentially gauges the shape and dimensions of the room and then projects the images all over the room so that, if you’re in the room, you feel as if it is raining down in real.
According to the company, Illumiroom is a Microsoft Research project which makes active use of the company’s flagship Kinect hardware. Kinect is combined with a Windows camera and the two work together with the projector to create the magic.
Microsoft says that Illumiroom ‘uses the appearance and the geometry of the room (captured by Kinect) to adapt the projected visuals in real-time without any need to custom pre-process the graphics.’ Clearly, the technology is very intriguing since it can project images in 3D with apparently a combination of hardware which doesn’t seem too complex.
The company is still working on the project and the demo that it presented during the CES keynote involved the prototype. We sure look forward to seeing the full and complete version of Illumiroom when it is ready.
