The National Archives has recently published that the US Air Force was working on a flying saucer-like craft in the year of 1956. They were researching on a project named “Project 1794” at USAF’s Aeronautical Systems Division, and was trying to develop the project. The purpose of this project was to build a supersonic flying saucer.
The project of building the supersonic flying saucer like aircraft was contracted to now-defunct Avro Aircraft of Ontario. The craft was designed for vertical take-off and landing (VTOL). The craft could reach a top speed between Mach 3 and Mach 4, with a ceiling of over 100,000 feet and a range of about 1,000 nautical miles. In fact, the craft was designed to spin through the Earth’s stratosphere at an average speed of about 2,600 mph.
According to the Project 1794, Final Development Summary Report, the cost of Project 1794 went up to $3,168,000 (at present the cost would have been $26.6 million) for 18-24 months. The project was going well, but for some reasons it was dropped.
