UK’s Cyber-Security Competition Winner Announced

Cyber-security competition is a great one to be held partly because not only does it show how much computer-geeks are sharp in their skills but also when it is held amongst the young teenage kids, then it means that they also get a lesson in cyber-security as a by-product. Recently, a competition held in Britain by the government’s intelligence organization GCHQ brought forth a teenage student, named Jonathan Millican, as the champion, according to TG Daily. He is just 19 years of age and is a first-year computer science student at Cambridge University.

He won a choice of career boosts, which are worth £100,000 each and his prize also includes post-graduate university bursaries, internships and industry training courses. He is also being funded for a masters degree at Royal Holloway, University of London. Now for being off the back guys who attack in cyberspace, the cyber-security guard, Jonathan Millican had to win such lucrative rewards.

Another interesting aspect of this show was that the competition was participated by non-professionals only. This has given a chance to new generation to get into it at such an early age. Jonathan said that getting into the competition was something that he had never thought of because he never considered a career in security. Despite his lack of serious interest, he sure seemed to be going for it, because he came out in the front competing thousands of entries. The final stage was designed by HP Labs and Cassidian.

At this level, the competitors had to simulate in a fight off of 15-minutes attack. There were a total of 30 finalists competing. Besides this stage, they had to also give suggestions to a small start-up company about protecting from hackers. Now hacking has become a big trouble these days with the hacktivists taking a reality of a rebellion group in their own right. Learning to fight off with them is most essential when it comes to being trained in anti-hacking or counter-hacking cyber-security.

Thus, the competition was modeled according to the requirements and challenges faced today in cyber space. There could a new one on futuristic and possible challenges too which would be simulated. Who knows this could be something facing new competitors next year. So for those of you out there interested in GCHQ next year’s challenge they can recruit by signing up, click here.
