Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook Is Seen Running Project Sputnik

A few ago, Dell unveiled its intents of trying its hands at a Project Sputnik pilot program. Now don’t let your imaginations run wild and think that perhaps it has something to do with letting remote astronauts get their daily dose of online social interactions. Rather, it is an excellent project which intends to devise such a notebook which will be able to run open-source software that can aid the developers.

The interest of the developer community was naturally piqued when Dell first made the announcement. But then, there haven’t been many details from the company regarding the project.

Now, however, a video has surfaced which shows a custom build of Ubuntu on top of Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook. The company hasn’t announced any certain notebook as being officially branded for the Project Sputnik, so this may still be Dell trying its hands at its different machines to see which one may fit the purpose well enough.

If you are a developer and really wish to try your hands at the Ubuntu build Dell has created, you can download a disk image and try it. The disk image essentially has nearly all the important components to enable the custom build of Ubuntu to run fine on XPS 13 Ultrabook. However, there are a lot features that are still missing from the build and Dell may still be working on them.
