Students Create Real Slingshot Controller To Play Angry Birds

Angry Birds is one of those very rare games on the mobile platform which have not only rose to wild popularity and fame but have been able to sustain it for a long time. The latest release on the franchise, Angry Birds Space, continues to be one of the most popular games on mobile devices.


The game is sitting squarely among the App Store’s top paid apps. So those who thought that people would soon get bored of flinging birds must rethink their opinions.

However, playing Angry Birds may indeed get boring for many. After spending hours trying to fling a virtual slingshot, many users may want to have a real, hands-on taste of the fun and action. And to satiate this desire, student at the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design have come up with a new creation.

The project is being called ‘Super Angry Birds’ by the students who are working on it. Basically, it was an attempt to create a real slingshot controller which, when used, would affect the dynamics of the virtual game. In other words, you would use the physical slingshot to pull back the bird and the game will read and imitate these moves for you.

This was, by no means, an easy task for the students to achieve. It required integration of the Arduino controller as well as some difficult mathematical calculations. The slingshot apparatus comprises of a small TNT box with a push-down handle and according to reviews, it works quite effectively. Watch the video below to catch a glimpse of the action:
