Press Release

Giesecke & Devrient Secure Flash Solutions Unveils the First Secure MicroSD Card with Automatic File Encryption

Munich/Taipei, May 8, 2012 – The Mobile Security Card Premium now being introduced by Giesecke & Devrient Secure Flash Solutions is the first secure microSD card to feature a “data safe” embedded in the card to protect confidential data. This card automatically encrypts all content that is stored in the microSD card’s flash memory. To unlock that secret content, owners must first enter the correct PIN. The Mobile Security Card Premium is ideal for all applications in industrial and consumer segments where sensitive data is stored on a microSD card. Devices hosting such applications include smartphones, data logger devices, and digital cameras.

The Mobile Security Card Premium, the latest member of the Mobile Security Card family, not only supports automatic file encryption but also comes with an additional security feature: thanks to state-of-the-art technology the card enables sensitive applications to be run directly in the secure, powerful environment of the card. In combination with the smartcard, larger, more complex security applications can run solely within the microSD card environment. In the past, these applications had to be distributed to the host and the smartcard. The usage of the Mobile Security Card Premium therefore substantially bolsters security for mobile applications.

Solution providers can easily integrate the Mobile Security Card Premium into their existing solutions. Devices do not need to be physically modified to use the Mobile Security Card Premium. Solution providers merely have to integrate a simple retrofitable code library, which supports access authentication for data and the smartcard. The code library runs on all current PC and mobile operating systems that support microSD cards.

The Mobile Security Card Premium has an integrated smartcard certified to Common Criteria EAL 5+, a Java Card Operating System certified to Common Criteria EAL 4+, 4 GB flash memory, and a speed class rating of 4.

Samples of the Mobile Security Card Premium are now available for solution providers and system integrators; mass production is scheduled to start in July 2012.
