iPhone v. Android

Apple’s latest mobile operating system, iOS 4, is already accounting for one-half of all iPhone web traffic, according to online advertising network Chitika.

Apple has trained its users well — we’re good and dutiful and ready to update our machines – this will be why nearly half of all iPhone users have already updated to iOS 4 — less than one month after release.

This is come from the research people at Chitika Research. They also reckon 10 per cent of current iOS 4 users have jumped over to 4.0.1.

Founded in 2003, Chitika, is a full-service on-line advertising network serving over 2 billion monthly impressions across more than 80,000 websites.

“Looking more deeply, iOS 4.0 – the version released on June 21st – is the dominant single version at 44.5%. Version 4.0.1 – the latest official release for the iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPhone 4 – clocks in at only 5% of the market, not surprising given that it was released less than a week ago.”

“Of the iOS 3.x variants, the most represented is 3.1.3 at 29.8%,” writes Daniel Ruby, research director.

Now, compare Apple’s users with the Android folk. The same research firm finds that while iPhone users upgrade fast, Android users, well. Android users just don’t.

This suggests a major split in the mind-set of Android and iPhone users. And it reflects the division between the two firms — consumers are taking sides.

“Some 5.8% of IP addresses with an Android device also had an iPhone.
