Ideally, smartphone vendors should attempt to reduce battery size over the years by relying on smarter technologies. But since newer smartphones pack more gear, the battery sizes are inevitably increasing. In the case of the new iPhone 5S handset, the battery size has been increased by 10%.
Apple didn’t reveal these exact numbers at the launch event of the new iPhone handsets. The cheaper model that the company announced at the event, namely iPhone 5C, has a battery which is 5% larger when compared to the battery of iPhone 5.
At the launch event, Apple did fleetingly mention that the battery size of iPhone 5C is larger than that of the earlier handsets. But the company stopped short of revealing more. The aforementioned percentages have now been discovered by Anand Tech from an FCC filing, submitted by Apple.
It must be noted here that with larger batteries, Apple is offering better battery life in both iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, when compared to iPhone 5. The new handsets offer up to 10 hours of 3G talk time, 10 hours of LTE internet use and 250 hours of standby time. In comparison, iPhone 5 offered 8 hours of talk time on 3G, 8 hours of LTE internet use and 225 hours of standby time.
Despite such improvements, concerns remain that smartphone vendors need to devise better, newer ways of powering up a handset. The current generation of smartphone batteries can not improve without growing in size and there will be a time when handset vendors can no longer find adequate space to squeeze in a huge battery.
