Following the recent disclosures about the appalling working environment in Apple supply chain, with underage employees, people dying of over exhaustion or losing their limbs wile making the iDevices, the public opinion took a stand in an effort to raise awareness on the situation and to urge Apple to pressure its Chinese suppliers to enforce the employees’ rights. The protesters claiming for an “ethical iPhone” brought a petition signed by a quarter of million concerned iOS fans to the newest Apple Store in New York and its seems that their complaint didn’t go unnoticed.

Apple officials asked the Fair Labor Association (FLA) to make a formal investigation at the Foxconn facilities in Shenzhen and Chengdu, China. The first inspections on this matter started yesterday, according to official statements. Maybe this is a direct effect of the protest that are requesting an ethical iPhone.

Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook himself took an interest in the situation and informed the media and the fans on the situation. “We believe that workers everywhere have the right to a safe and fair work environment, which is why we’ve asked the FLA to independently assess the performance of our largest suppliers,” said Tim Cook. He also added that the investigations are on large scale and the situation called for exceptional measures. “The inspections now underway are unprecedented in the electronics industry, both in scale and scope, and we appreciate the FLA agreeing to take the unusual step of identifying the factories in their reports,” explained Cooks.
