Skyfire Browser for iPhone Approved Allows Flash Video

Skyfire Browser app for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch has finally been approved by Apple and will be available on the App Store at a price of $2.99 on Thursday. The browser allows Flash videos to be viewed on Apple products as HTML5.When an Apple iPhone user surfs to page with Flash content, he will see a thumbnail which can allow the content to be streamed as HTML5 content.

The Skyfire browser already brought similar functionality earlier this year to Google’s Android platform. Skyfire 2.0, launched in May 2010, has more than 1.5 million downloads on handsets running Google’s mobile operating system.

The application gets around Apple’s ban of Adobe Flash by having Skyfire’s servers download Flash video and convert it to HTML5. When a user visits a page with Flash, they see a selectable thumbnail which then allows the content to be streamed directly to the iOS device, negating the need for Flash.

While users may get access to Flash on their iDevices using Skyfire, they won’t be able to interact with these Flash files. This is because the entire format conversion happens outside the iPhone’s local environment and consequently would render Flash-based games and music players dysfunctional.

Remember it will be available Thursday for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.
