Meet The World’s First Solar Powered Laptop – Sol: Runs On Ubuntu

Earlier you have seen solar powered cellphonesolar powered charging stationssolar powered plane, solar powered UAV, solar powered Tablet PC etc. And now it’s time to see another solar-powered thing – solar powered laptop. Canada-based WeWi Telecommunications Inc. has devised world’s first solar-powered laptop called Sol that runs on Ubuntu OS and is said to provide power up to 10 hours on full battery charge.

Sol comes with a 13.3-inch LCD screen with 1366 x 768 resolution, a 1.86GHz dual-core Intel Atom D2500 processor with 2GB of RAM (it can upgraded to 4GB), a 320GB SATA HDD from Seagate and GMA3600 graphics. Besides, it packs a 3-megapixel camera, a USB 2.0 port, an audio jack, HDMI, Ethernet and SD card ports like most standard laptops.

This laptop supports Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth and it will be available in 3G and 4G LTE configurations as well. The Sol will cost $350, but by paying $400, you can have a waterproof Sol laptop. Sol has been designed for use in the military, education and developing countries where electricity is scarce. WeWi Telecommunications Inc. claim that the device can run directly off solar energy or can harness the sun’s rays to charge the laptop’s battery in under two hours. Once fully charged, the battery is expected to last between eight and ten hours.
