Canonical attracted the eager interests of users, developers and critics alike when it released its very own mobile OS, namely Ubuntu OS. The operating system looks promising, complete with slick looks and great features. Now, Canonical CEO, Mark Shuttleworth, has stated that Ubuntu OS smartphones will be arriving by October this year.
When Canonical unveiled Ubuntu OS, it attracted praises from many quarters. But concerns were cited that without a hardware product of its own, Canonical can’t make Ubuntu OS a decent player in the mobile arena. Apparently, Canonical was anticipating those issues and had been working on developing Ubuntu OS hardware.
The company’s founder and CEO has now revealed that in October this year, the Ubuntu OS smartphones will reach two ‘large geographic markets.’ While he didn’t give any more details, we can only surmise that it would either be North America and Europe or North America and China.
Shuttleworth further revealed that by the end of this month, the OS will be made available to the developers, which can easily be used on Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus. Interestingly, he claimed that a number of carriers have expressed interest in the upcoming Ubuntu OS smartphones but he didn’t divulge which carriers has his company decided to partner with.
From the looks of it, things are finally starting to look up for Ubuntu OS and with a bit of luck and a few timely decisions, Canonical may be able to usher the operating system among the big players.
