One Wheel Based Self-Balancing Electric Unicycle Made By MIT Student

Recently Stephan Boyer, a MIT student has created Self-balancing electric unicycle named ‘Bullet’ for campus transport. Bullet is one wheel based which runs through one Electric Motor and two 12 Volt Batteries.

This single-wheel transporter ‘Bullet’ is made of MIG-welded steel body, have two 7Ah 12-volt batteries, a 450-watt electric motor and an ATmega328P chip. The top speed of this mini vehicle is about 15 mph which can easily go 5 miles on a single charge. This one axis only balances forward and backward, not side to side, which makes the experience like riding a motorized bicycle with no hands. It seems that, someone is practicing for upcoming Circus. As Bullet is small in size (compared to a bicycle, scooter, moped, etc), it’s easy to carry it on the bus or train with no problem. Unfortunately, it’s not that much easy to ride on this Self-Balancing Unicycle (SBU). In fact, Stephan Boyer himself took several hours to ride in a straight line without crashing and it took few more days to learn how to turn in a controlled manner. Stephan Boyer has spent $44 on battery pack, $195 on drive system including the wheel.

This is Stephan Boyer’s primary mode of transportation to MIT campus. The price have been decided yet while it will be available as commercial option soon. Hope so, this will be a popular vehicle for students to travel in a short distance according to the price.
