Apple Enhances iOS Sensitivity On iPad Mini Due To Thinner Bezel

Apple’s iPad Mini, announced on Tuesday, has a 7.9″ display rather than the 9.7″ display included on the full-sized iPad. The miniaturized tablet has a much thinner bezel than its big brother, which will cause sensitivity issues in the long-run. To fix that issue, Apple has tweaked its iOS operating system to ignore accidental touches caused by the thinner bezel.

Apple’s Jony Ive discussed that when designing the iPad Mini “it became clear that we had to reduce the width of the borders so you can easily pick it up and use it with one hand.” As an immediate result of the issue, a user’s thumb may easily trigger the iPad’s screen upon an accidental touch. Moreover, Apple decided to tweak the iPad Mini’s iOS software to terminate the sensitivity issue caused by the thin bezel.

Jony Ive issued the following statement:

Rethinking the screen meant we also had to rethink the software behind it. iPad mini intelligently recognizes whether your thumb is simply resting on the display or whether you’re intentionally interacting with it. It’s the kind of detail you’ll notice.

Since iOS was released in 2007, Apple’s software has always recognized accidental touches; this iPad Mini iOS update just improves on the issue. When you have such a thin bezel it’s difficult task avoiding accidental taps on the side of the screen.
