iPad Recharge Problem Is Intended, Apple Says

There has been a lot of uproar over the battery recharge of the new iPad from Apple. The whole issue started when it was found out that the new iPad’s battery keeps charging even after the screen says it is 100%  charged. In fact, charging the tablet beyond that point brings more battery life to the tablet. Now, Apple has stated that this contradiction between displayed charge and actual battery charging of the new iPad is intentional.

Apple has finally given its official stance over the battery problem of the new iPad. And it is, that the difference between stated charging status and the actual status of the battery is intended and designed. Earlier, Apple had issued a similar statement saying that charging the battery beyond the point when the screen says it is 100% charged may result in damaging the hardware.

According to Apple VP Michael Tchao, ‘That circuitry is designed so you can keep your device plugged in as long as you would like. It’s a great feature that’s always been in iOS.’ He was pointing to the fact that when Apple devices are plugged and reach near 100% percent, they discharge a bit and then recharge to 100%. This continues as long as the device is plugged so that no harm is done to the device.

However, Dr. Soneira, the one who pointed out this very problem, disagrees with Apple’s response and stated, ‘My essential point is simply that if the new iPad is fully charged overnight then my tests show it will run 11.6 hours, which is 1.2 hours longer than if it just charged to 100% (10.4 hours). This will matter to some users. If the iPad has cell and WiFi and background tasks running then I agree with Apple that it will cycle down and up. My lab tests were in Airplane Mode so that did not happen and I measured the true battery state.’
