Razer Edge – A Spectacular Wndows 8 Gaming Tablet

The Razer Edge is a new gaming tablet that runs on Windows 8. The tablet has the capability of holding the title “Future of Computing” for its extra-ordinary features. The tablet can reinvent itself as a handheld gaming device – a tablet, a console and a computer – right before your eyes. CNET calls it, aptly, the “Swiss Army gaming tablet.”

Razer Edge

Razer is widely known for manufacturing gaming hardware, software, and systems. Along with some phenomenal features, the Razer Edge gaming tablet is one of the most inventive PC gaming devices. It weighs about 2.1 pounds and measures 10.9-inch x 7-inch x 0.8- inch (278.5 mm x 178.85 mm x 19.5 mm). The tablet can convert into four different modes designed specifically for gamers – tablet, keyboard, mobile console, and home console. It can run all PC games and applications. The tablet has a 10.1-inch display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 and features Intel’s 3rd generation Intel i5/i7 Core processors and touts Nvidia GeForce series graphics with Optimus technology.

The GamePad controller works with the XInput tech, meaning any PC game optimized to work with an Xbox controller will work seamlessly with the Edge’s gamepad case. The tablet can snap in and out of a GamePad, a casing featuring those two side-mounted controllers, bringing real gaming controls to bear. When gamers will dock the device into the GamePad contraption, the whole thing weighs around four pounds, making it difficult to hold upright for long.

To use the Edge as a console, you’ll need the $100 Console Dock, which charges the tablet, has an HDMI-out port, and adds three USB ports for controllers. There are four USB ports at the back. The GamePad controller costs $249, the HDMI dock goes for $99 and the laptop dock will end up at least $150.

The Edge comes in two flavors, base and Pro. The entry-level Razer Edge gaming tablet comes with a 1.7GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of DDR3, and a 64GB SSD for $999, while the Edge Pro bumps that up to an i7-3517U (1.9GHz), 8GB, and a 128GB SSD for $1299. Upgrading to a 256GB drive costs a further $150. You can purchase the Razer Edge gaming tablet either directly from the manufacturer or from Amazon.

The last time around, when Razer turned out the gaming focused, black macbook clone, they fumbled around for so long to get it to market, the GPU was outdated by a year or two, and for the extremely high price, you got a nice looking aluminum slab that had an old, hot running GPU, instead of the new Kepler architecture with its heat efficient and newly miniaturized silicon.

Lets hope that doesn’t happen this time, and it gets delivered with this year’s 7-series GeForce models.
