49% Of Top 100 Blogs Are Hosted On WordPress

WordPress has steadily dominated the world of blogging. It is perhaps the most sophisticated blogging platform that is used on such a wide scale. Whereas the world was momentarily dazed with the notion of Tumblr, the statistics reveal that WordPress continues to capture the hearts, and blogs, of some 73 million people and 49% of the top 100 blogs on Technorati’s list.

Although Tumblr has garnered a massive 51 million blogs so far, WordPress still takes the lead with its 73 million. Moreover, professional blogging is a far better gauge to judge which blogging platform is more preferred. And on that index, WordPress wins with flying colors.

WordPress hosted 32% of the top 100 blogs some three years ago. Now, things are even rosier for the platform. Out of the 100 top blogs of this year, WordPress hosts 49%! In contrast, Tumblr hosts only 1% of them whereas Blogger has 2% to its name.

One of the reasons for WordPress’ immense success could be that it is open-source and the WordPress community is very active in shipping out newer, better features, widgets and updates for the platform. A number of other blogging platforms lack this kind of support.

Folks at WordPress are of course happy with these results. The founding developer of WordPress, Matt Mullenweg had this to say, ‘The last few years we’ve really focused on both the usability and flexibility of WordPress, which has resulted in accelerating growth in both big and small sites. I expect even higher adoption among the largest sites and blogs over the next year.’
