Google Cracks Down On Low Quality Exact Match Domains

Google has long been trying to purge of any spam or low quality content that may appear high in its search results. To that end, Google is continually applying changes in its search algorithms. And now, the company has announced that it will be reducing low-quality exact match domains in search results.

Google algorithm update news from Matt Cutts

Exact match domains essentially means that a given domain matches exactly with the search query users provide. For instance, if users were searching for ‘blueberry cupcakes’, the domain blueberrycupcakes.com would be an exact match. And according to Google’s current algorithm, it appears high in ranking even when it has low-quality content.

Matt Cutts, the head of Google’s team which fights web spam, has now announced through his Twitter profile that Google will be taking care of this problem soon. According to him, the search engine will soon add a “small” algorithm change which will “reduce low-quality ‘exact-match’ domains.”

For sites with good, quality content, this should be no cause for concern. However, there are a number of websites which have their domains based on popular search keywords. And although they don’t feature any useful content, they are ranked high in search simply because of an exact match with the search query.

With this new change in the algorithm, such websites will essentially be doomed. And for the users, it is good news since they will now be able to view the relevant links with quality content ranked higher in search results.
