Google has reached an unprecedented milestone as the world’s first Internet company to claim over 1 billion unique users in a single month on its websites and second most popular destination was Microsoft with 905million unique visitors. According to data released by market researcher comScore, the number of unique visitors to Google‘s sites rose by 8.4% – from 931 million last May to just over a billion (1,009,699,000 in total) in May 2011. Google’s biggest growth areas are India and South Africa, which accounted for 14.3% and 13.5% of visitors respectively. In contrast, the lowest numbers were in China and South Korea, which accounted for just 0.8 and 0.7 per cent of visitors respectively. Google beat off competition from Microsoft and arch-rival Facebook. Microsoft took the number two spot with 905 million visitors last month – a rise of 15% on the same period last year. Facebook took third place, with 714 million visitors last month – up 30% on last May. The social networking site’s stat pushes Yahoo – which took last year’s third spot, into fourth place. It had 689 million visitors in May – a 10.8% gain on last year. However while Google may have outpaced Facebook on visitor numbers, users collectively spent more time on the social networking site – 250 billion minutes in May – than they did on Google (200 billion) and Microsoft (204 billion).
