The London 2012 Olympics has undoubtedly got more social media coverage than any previous Olympics’. In fact, the London 2012 Olympic games is ‘the most social games’ in history. There were over 9.66 million tweets for the opening ceremony alone; a lot more than the entire duration of the 2008 Beijing Games. To celebrate this unprecedented social activity, official sportswear sponsor of London 2012 Olympic – Adidas, has brought the social media shoe. With designer Nash Money, Adidas has customized its adiPower Barricade tennis shoe into a social media shoe. Now, athletes can tweet while they’re on the court!

Social Media Shoe

German sports clothing manufacturer Adidas decided to revamp the adiPower Barricade shoe by turning it into a social media shoe. Don’t bungle this social media shoe with the Shanzhai-Adidas Shoe Phone. This shoe is not a phone, it’s a ‘tweet machine’. So, what’s inside the shoe?

  • A built-in Arduino unit.
  • External LCD to display information to user.
  • Personalized/customized software that polls the Twitter API’s to share specific data on the shoe screen.

The social media shoe also features an LED lighting embedded into its three stripes, with its colors controllable by a remote control. Adidas hope, “In 2016, every athlete might have a shoe like this.”

Currently the shoe is on display at the Adidas Media Lounge in London. Fans can interact with this unusual little pair via Twitter at @adidasbarricade. Adidas is planning to mass produce the shoe sometime in 2016.
