Facebook Adds Voice Messaging And VoIP Calls Features To Its Messenger App

Facebook is rolling out a significant upgrade for its Facebook Messenger app for iOS and Android platforms. It does look that the social network intends to use its social media influence to take on the likes of Skype in the coming days. It has now added the ability to send voice messages and make free calls in the Messenger app.

Facebook Messenger app

The upgraded Messenger app comes with a ‘record’ button towards the bottom of a conversation. During a conversation, whenever you need to record a voice message, you simply have to hit the record button and the message would be recorded and embedded at that place in the conversation. Without a doubt, this is a very useful addition to the Messenger app.

The other major addition to the app is even more enticing. The social network has added the ability to make free calls from within the Messenger. However, these free calls will be making use of the user’s data plans. That still is quite affordable since calling from within the app would not directly utilize the call allowance.

The slight glitch is that for now, the free calls feature is limited only to the Canadian users. According to Facebook, “To use the service, Canadian users will be able to log into their Messenger app, open a conversation with the person they want to call, hit the ‘i’ button in the top-right corner and selecting ‘Free Call.’ To send and receive calls, users will need to have the latest version of the app that is available today.”

We do hope that Facebook may soon rollout the VoIP features for users in other regions too. Until then, we  will content ourselves with the new voice messaging feature.
