Social media has become a vehicle to help us stay connected with a great number of people. But it has its downsides too. A girl from Shanghai recently shared her final, dejected thoughts and photos on Instagram before committing suicide.
The girl in question used the user name jojotsai1012 on Instagram and had recently undergone a breakup with her boyfriend. She couldn’t take it and decided to take her life. Before her suicide, she shared a few thoughts about why she no longer felt like living any more.
According to her, “It’s been 12 days since the break up. I’ve gone out, had meals, watched movies, drank, sang KTV with all sorts of guys, and any one of them is more handsome than he is, richer than he is. I say this only to prove that it isn’t that I can’t find guys better than him, much less me thinking him so good looking, so rich. There are a bunch of men with good circumstances around me, as friends who know me all know. It’s just that my heart is unable to accept anyone else.”
While the incident is utterly tragic in itself, it is also a reminder that social networks may have brought us together, but they have also grown distances in a way. It is not easy to reach for someone over the internet and help them get over grief or depression. In a way, most of us are spectators in the online conversation, rather than being the participants. And that mitigates our ability to genuinely connect with each other.
