Pope Benedict XVI Joins Twitter Using @Pontifex Handle

As we move headlong unto the road of technological advancement, religion has tried hard to keep up. It is only natural, then, that the Pope Benedict XVI will be tweeting from a personal Twitter account soon. Interestingly, he will be using the handle @Pontifex.

For a person who hasn’t sent out even a single tweet yet, Pope Benedict sure has a lot of followers. Currently, he is being followed by more than 350,000 people. In a news conference, the Vatican authorities revealed that the Pope will soon start tweeting from his account.

He will be tweeting in eight languages, starting from December 12. If you wish to put any questions to the Pope, you can simply tag along #askpontifex in your tweet, and the Pope will try to respond to you as soon as he can.

However, Pope himself will not be tweeting through the account. Although the few initial tweets would be his own, the account would eventually be handled by someone else at Vatican. Still, “It’s always going to have his engagement and his approval. Not physically, but from his mind,” we are told.

In recent months, Vatican has tried to bolster its social media activity, perhaps realizing that the social media is too important in this era of technology. All differences with Vatican aside, it is indeed good to see that Pope, or at least someone representing him, will directly interact with the people on Twitter. That should be helpful in satiating all those questions regarding theology, the priests and what not.
