Twitter Resets Passwords Of A Large Number Of Users, Unintentionally

One of the good security features that Twitter has enabled is that it resets a user’s password if it believes that his account has been compromised. Interestingly enough, the micro-blogging website recently reset the password of a large number of users, unintentionally.

Twitter

Normally, it is not that surprising to be unable to log in to one’s Twitter account. At such occasions, Twitter usually tells the user that his password has been reset due to security concerns and that he now needs to choose a new password.

However, what is unusual is when a large number of users get the same prompt at the same time. Naturally, this raised concerns and Twitter then had to come out with a clarification.

According to the website, “When we believe an account may have been compromised, we reset the password and send an email letting the account owner know this has happened along with information about creating a new password. In this case, we unintentionally reset passwords of a larger number of accounts, beyond those that we believed to have been compromised.”

Nonetheless, no harm was done to user accounts and users were able to gain back access to their Twitter accounts within few minutes by choosing new passwords. Besides, it is always a good practice to change passwords regularly so as to avoid the hacking attempts based on social engineering.
