The Team Behind MegaUpload Brings a High Profile Team of Attorneys

Kim Schmitz, also known as Kim DotCom one of the four New Zealanders arrested after the MegaUpload cyberlocker services were closed, assembles a team of powerful attorneys for his defense. Ira Rothken, one of the attorneys explained for CNET that his clients are putting together a team of experts to help the defense in courts across the world.

Rothken was reluctant to give the name for any of the copyright, criminal and technology attorneys who are going to be on the team. He also pointed out that the proper procedure has been violated. “The government has taken down one of the world’s largest storage providers and has done so without giving MegaUpload an opportunity to be heard in court.”

The worse is yet to come, as FBI has started the extradition procedures to bring Kim DotCom in the US to face some serious charges. The U.S. Justice Department has accused DotCom and other associates of him of racketeering, money laundering, and Internet piracy. DotCom is accused of causing film industry damages of $600 million.

Conversely, Rothken dismissed the charges and further explained that his clients have changes to win the legal battle. “Many of the allegations made are similar to those in the copyright case filed against YouTube and that was a civil case….and YouTube won.”
