Google recently announced that it will soon abandon its RSS aggregation tool, Google Reader. The announcement aroused a debate on the social media, with journalists, reporters and other RSS users seeking out a viable alternative. Apparently, they found it in Feedly and within two days, more than 500,000 news users have signed up for the tool.
In a post following Google’s announcement, we suggested that Feedly is an excellent alternative. The tool not only provides an excellent way of organizing different RSS feeds, it also comes with a certain visual appeal, something which is absent in Google Reader.
Right on the heels of Google’s decision to shut down Google Reader, Feedly team posted on its blog that it would be cloning the Google Reader API, allowing Google Reader users to transition to Feedly in a very smooth fashion. I am among the more than 500,000 users who have signed up for Feedly over the last two days.
And I can testify that the transition was absolutely smooth. Feedly simply seeks to connect with your Google Reader account and then automatically populate all your RSS lists on the Feedly home page. The new wave of users has led the Feedly team to increase its bandwidth by 10 times. Feeldy is also setting up new servers to handle the load from these new users.
According to a new post by Feedly, “Our main priorities over the next 30 days are 1) to keep the service up, 2) listen to new users for suggestions and 3) add features weekly.”
That is certainly promising. And for once, Google Reader users can sigh in relief that at least someone’s got their back on this one.
