Canada Arrested The First Heartbleed Hacker

Ever since Heartbleed bug was discovered, police as well as security agencies had been searching for the offenders. Yesterday, Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced that they had arrested a 19-year-old Ontario man for allegedly taking advantage of the Heartbleed bug to steal tax information from a government website.

Heartbleed bug

Heartbleed is the most raging topic of most online conversations right now. That’s because it is a bug that has affected two-thirds of the web. Earlier this week, the Canada Revenue Agency revealed that using the Heartbleed Internet security bug, an attacker had stolen 900 Social Security numbers. This was the very first known case of a hacker, taking advantage of the security flaw for malicious purposes.

Canadian law enforcement teams had been seeking for this criminal. And after long search, Royal Canadian Mounted Police along with law enforcement authorities arrested the first suspect named Stephen Arthuro Solis-Reyes from his home on Tuesday. Solis-Reyes is a computer science student at Western University. The officials arrested him for “unauthorized use of a computer” and “mischief in relation to data.”

After arresting him, the officials confiscated his computer and the Canadian government said that it would try to notify all the Canadian citizens affected by the breach. Solis-Reyes is scheduled to appear in court in Ottawa today (April 17).
