Scan QR Codes And Get Discounts On Shopping

South Korean retailer Emart has come up with one of the most creative ideas to boost sales, using the sunlight and an innovative QR Code concept. Emart has placed 3D QR code sculptures throughout Seoul. By scanning the QR codes just between 12 and 1pm (perfect lunch time) each day, lucky consumers can get discounts at the store during those quiet shopping hours.

The sales of Emart’s all stores decreased drastically during lunch time. Therefore to gear up sales they have come up with a peculiar but innovative idea. They have strategically placed 3D QR code sculptures at different places in Seoul. People will scan these QR codes and lucky winners will get discount for shopping. To be noted, these QR codes can only be scanned between 12 and 1pm, because during that time the sunlight is such, that the shadows reflected on the sculpture completes the QR code, which makes it scannable.

Emart is calling this campaign the “Sunny Sale”. Consumers who will be able to successfully scan the QR code will automatically be redirected to the Sunny Sales mobile home page. There they will be given exclusive discounts at the Emart store. Remember, purchases can be made directly using a smartphone. The purchased products will be delivered by Emart directly to the consumer’s home. The reason for putting up Sunny Sale between 12 and 1pm is to enhance sales during lunchtime.

Emart has reported that the Sunny Sale campaign has been expanded to 36 locations in Seoul. Already 12,000 coupons have been sold. In February, Emart membership in February increased by 58% from the previous month January. Emart also observed that a 25% increase in sales during lunch hours.

Although it was deployed in the service of a mundane chain store deal, the combination of ancient science and new smartphone technology is truly inspiring. You can see the Shadow QR Code in action in the video below.

If you are in Seoul, you can try this. Don’t forget to share your experience with us.
