Imagine watching a hundred thousand fireflies floating on a the currents of a river. It definitely would be a scene to behold. This is precisely what was experienced in Tokyo when 100,000 solar-powered LED bulbs were let to float into the Sumida River. The bulbs pretty much imitated the ‘fireflies’ which are an important part of Japanese lore.
The whole act was part of the Tokyo Hotaru Festival 2012. Over centuries, people from Tokyo would gather by the Sumida River and rejoice in the firework displays performed above the river. With the inception of technology, this has naturally evolved into a far more sophisticated and charming tradition.
As part of the festival, 100,000 LED bulbs measuring 3 inches in length were allowed to float into the river. They were allowed to run along the course of the river for quite some distance and then were recollected at a later point.
Incidentally, this was done on the very day when the much-touted super moon was being seen. With the background of the exquisitely brighter and larger super moon, it was a treat for the eyes. Posted below is a video of the occasion which gives a glimpse of its beauty.
