Apple Kills 99-Cent iTunes TV Show Rentals From iTunes

Apple has removed the ability to rent TV shows from both iTunes and its Apple TV, taking away what was just last year one of the major advertised selling points of the $99 streaming-centric set-top box, introduced the ability to rent certain episodes of television programs for $0.99 each last September. Apple recently flipped the switch on streaming purchases for its relatively new second generation Apple TV and it appears 99-cent rentals didn’t move the needle, so we’ll wait and see what the folks from Cupertino have up their sleeve next……………

Apple is working on a new technology to deliver video to televisions and revives rumors that Apple is seeking to launch a subscription package for television content. Apple has of course been pushing its AirPlay technology for streaming video from iOS devices to its Apple TV set-top box and has been rumored to be interested in launching an Apple-branded television set. If Apple is indeed pursuing subscriptions, it will undoubtedly run into heavy resistance from Big Cable and networks that rely heavily on cable subscriptions may feel pressure from cable providers not to join Apple’s venture……………

Next Apple TV Will Not Use OLED

Rumours that Apple would be partnering with LG to produce a 55-inch OLED television and now Apple has turned its focus to the television market, providing a device that would possibly allow users to stream music, videos and TV shows via its iTunes platform, but Apple is currently unsure of OLED technology due to its higher cost and related issues with large-sized OLED displays. Apple will eventually switch its digital gear to OLED tech and this won’t happen until three or four more years as the company has no interest in pricing itself out of the market…………
