Researchers Create Blood Vessels Using Inkjet Printer

Many recent break-through researches in the field of biology have been possible only due to the advanced technology that is available today. Scientists have used technologies to enhance their understanding of organs and organisms. Now, German research firm Fraunhofer Institute, the maker of MP3 format, is working on creating fully functional human blood vessels using specialized inkjet printers.

Researchers at Fraunhofer Institute have devised a way to print blood vessels in 3D with the help of inkjet printers using an organic ink. The ink is filled into the printing device, the printer releases a fine mist of this ink which is caught on a plate and artificial blood vessels are formed.

Scientists working on this project believe that these artificial blood vessels can prove very significant in organ transplants and can save lives. For instance, during by-pass operations the patient’s veins are usually not healthy enough. In such cases, an external ‘blood vessels network’ can be used to direct blood in any part of the body.

In fact, researchers argue, it is perfectly rational to hope that the discovery can lead to the creation of complete artificial organs which can have immense significance for human health in the coming days. Watch the video below and see if you are convinced yet.
