Study Says If You Keep Getting Bad News, You Will Not Feel Sad Like Before

Due to many reason your jolly mode could turn into bad and you may feel sad. Interestingly, a recent study claims that regular exposure to bad news makes people numb to sadness. In simple word, sad news won’t affect a people anymore, if he/she frequently gets sad news.

Smiling Face And Sad Face

Researchers at Tel Aviv University hired some people and these people were asked to undergo a psychological test called the ‘Emotional Stroop Task.’ The Emotional Stroop Task was done to demonstrate how repetitive bad news can lose its power. However, researchers showed the people a number of words (both neutral and negative) and later asked them to name the colors of the printed words that were shown to them.

Researchers found that those people took a bit long time to identify the colors of negative words like ‘terrorism’ than neutral words like ‘table.’ Researchers also found that when participants were shown the negative word twice, they were able to quickly identify the color. On the other hand, when the negative word was shown only once, they named the colors of neutral words slowly because their mind was still reeling from the effect of the negative word.

According to researchers, this time dilation occurred because the brain took longer time to process the color of negative words as they were related to distracting or threatening. After the simple task, researchers concluded that this trend is more prominent in people suffering from emotional disorders, like depression or anxiety.

Researchers Dr Moshe Shay Ben-Haim, who led the study, said in a statement, “A bad mood is known to slow cognition. We show that, counter intuitively, you can avoid getting into a bad mood in the first place by dwelling on a negative event. “If you look at the newspaper before you go to work and see a headline about a bombing or tragedy of some kind, it’s better to read the article all the way through and repeatedly expose yourself to the negative information. You will be freer to go on with your day in a better mood and without any negative effects.”

Researchers study has been published in different journal.
