Google has updated its search app for iPhone, changing its name from “Google Mobile” to “Google Search” and adding in features that bring it closer to the full web search experience.
Google has launched the Person Finder tool to help the affected people of Japan. Person Finder is a simple site that opens with the question, “What is Your Situation?” From there, users can select a link for “I’m Looking for Someone,” or “I Have Information About Someone.” The application already has thousands of records about people stored, and will remain in place as people in Japan struggle to reconnect with friends, relatives, colleagues and others. It’s also a useful resource for those outside Japan who may be looking for information about people who are there.

Google has announced that mobile users on Android (2.2+) and iOS devices (4.0+) now have access to Instant Previews, a feature that Google launched on the desktop last November. The Google Instant Preview for mobiles is similar to the desktop version, offering preview of webpages from the search results.

Google has released a new compatibility pack which helps developers combat fragmentation-related issues. The new released static library exposes the same Fragments API (as well as the new LoaderManager and a few other classes) so that applications compatible with Android 1.6 or later can use fragments to create tablet-compatible user interfaces.
Google updated its Maps application for Android smartphones with two new features. The new Google Maps, the version 5.2, is significantly improved with emphasis on Google Hotpot and Latitude social kind-of services.
