Felix Baumgartner Successfully Jumps From The Edge Of Space

Felix Baumgartner made a lot of headlines recently when he announced that he would be doing a free fall right from the edge of the space. We reported earlier about all the preparations that went into planning for this huge feat. And yesterday, Baumgarnter has successfully jumped off from 128,000 feet above the ground and accomplished the extra-ordinary task, shattering a number of world records in doing so.

Felux Baumgartner freefall jump

The whole event was sponsored by Red Bull and was streamed live on Discovery Channel and a number of other channels, showing his adjustments before the jump and then finally, the leap. It was most exciting to see him leave the air balloon, stand on a small step and then finally, dive right into the empty space.

He was successful in breaking a number of world records with this single jump. By taking his balloon to a height of 128,000 feet which is now the highest ever a manned balloon has gone. The previous record was that of a manned balloon flight to the height of 113,740 feet but Baumgartner’s journey into the space easily surpassed that.

The other record that he smashed was, of course, that of the highest jump ever made by a human being. The last record was set at 102,800 feet, made as far back as 1960. But by jumping from a whopping height of 128,000 feet, Baumgartner has set a new high, one which may be too difficult to surpass for a long time ahead.

Another rather interesting record set by this entire event is that it was going out on reportedly 8 million streams concurrently which is the highest simultaneous streams for a single video. You can watch the video of the historic jump below.
