Opportunity has been on Mars for more than 10 years. On December 26, 2013, Opportunity was at the “Murray Ridge.” This is the place where Opportunity is now spending the Martian winter. However, on December 26, Opportunity snapped some pictures surrounding that area. The above picture (left image) tells that there was nothing except the Martian soil. But interestingly,13 days later – meaning on January 8, 2014, Opportunity discovered a jelly doughnut shaped mysterious rock at the same place (right image) after it had finished a short drive.

NASA scientists are now calling that rock as “Pinnacle Island” as its outside is white colored and red in the middle. The rock’s .” The rock’s upside-down resting position gives scientists a big chance to study the rock surface that has likely been laying downward on the planet’s surface for billions of years.

Steve Squyres, Opportunity’s lead scientist at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y said, “We were absolutely startled. It looks like a jelly donut. And it appeared, it just plain appeared, at that spot.”

At present, the rover team busy examining the rock, trying to figure out how it got there. What do you thing guys – how did the rock appear there while at first, it was not there? Share your thoughts with us in the comments box below.
