3D Printer And Robotic Arm Used By Stone Spray To Create Durable Sandcastles

Ever since 3D printing and 3D printers have become more accessible, affordable and common, they are being used in increasingly larger number of projects. One such project is the Stone Spray project. It has been created by researchers at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia.


The project was actually aimed at finding out a unique and innovative way which can then be used to create architecture out of soil. For this purpose, a robot was being created which used a jet spray system to provide a mixture of soil or sand. This mixture was then coupled with an eco-friendly liquid binder, thus creating some very durable sandcastles.

The robot that was being used in the whole procedure makes use of a tiny amount of energy and can be further tweaked to run only on solar energy.

In a way, this paves way to the wide-scale use of 3D printing. It goes on to show that the technology can be used to create environment-friendly and durable products which can be utilized in real life. The video below gives an idea of how the sandcastles were being created by the robot:
