Apple Gets A Number Of iPhone Domains Used As Porn Sites

A number of websites using iPhone in their name were being used for porn materials. Apple had lodged a complain against these websites and claimed rights over them. This week, a settlement has allowed Apple to grab control of about seven domains which fell in this category.

The settlement in favour of Apple has been rather swift. Apple had filed the case, only a month ago, with the World Intellectual Property Organization. The domain that the Apple filed the case against is named squatter.

You can have them, Apple told:
Apple eventually dropped the case against these domains. Why? Because sqautter, together with about six other sites with iPhone in their name and being used for porn, agreed to hand over the domain to Apple. The domain now comes into the effective custody of MarkMonitor, the company that handles domain names for Apple.

Apple had registered the case with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). It was formulated in 1967. WIPO’s primary purpose is to stop individuals or organizations from ‘cybersquatting.’ It is a practice in which a domain name, similar to the name of a popular, well-known company, is acquired by a non-relevant person or organization. This domain name is then used often for nefarious purposes, aimed mostly at tarnishing the image of that organization.

Apple had been pointed to these domain names when it was discovered that they were using iPhone in their names but their content was porn-oriented. This, of course, was an evident attempt to fool users into opening porn sites. This also included the website iphone4s.com, which a common user can easily take to be the official site for iPhone 4S.
