As the time to London Olympics draws closer, the preparations for the event are being ramped up in anticipation. BBC has now announced that it will be streaming the video from every single event of Olympics live. While that in itself will be a load of work, BBC has further said that it will be offering a number of interactive options on the live stream. NBC had also earlier announced to live-stream the event.
These interactive options include the ability to pause and rewind the live feed. Viewers will also be able to view live information about the participants as well as the results and leaderboards, thus keeping them well updated with all that is happening.
If there are any key alerts that happen while a viewer is watching the live feed, he will be notified through an alert. By clicking the alert, the user can then go to the respective page.
One problem that users have often noted about BBC’s iPlayer is that it doesn’t deliver video of very good quality. Normally, the video streamed by iPlayer is 1.5 Mbps at maximum. However, BBC is also taking care of this by bumping up the maximum quality of the video on iPlayer to 3.5 Mbps which means the experience of watching Olympics on iPlayer will be quite good.
In total, BBC has plans of covering a whopping 25,000 hours of content. This content will then be delivered to the audience in Britain through a total of 24 channels. BBC also has plans of launching iOS and Android apps solely to deliver this live feed to the users of iOS and Android devices. There will also be a TV application of BBC which will be offering video stream to a number of platforms, including PlayStation 3, Sony Smart TVs, Virgin Media TiVo and a number of other platforms.
According to BBC Director, Roger Mosey, “We will be bringing live coverage of every Olympic Sport from every venue, both through a combination of BBC One and BBC Three and up to 24 simultaneous streams live online on PC, mobile, tablet or connected TV. These services will be complemented by coverage on Radio 5 live, mobile and tablet, while the majority of cable and satellite viewers will be able to access the 24 channels on their providers’ platform through the BBC Red Button.”
Finally, if you happen to be in London while the event is happening and don’t want to go into a crowded venue to watch the game in person, you can always hook up to one of the huge screens that BBC has planned it will be erecting around the city.
