Eric Schmidt Says Apple Should Have Stuck With Google Maps

Apple has stirred a lot of controversy by ousting Google Maps from iOS 6 and replacing the service with its own Maps app. Since Apple’s new maps lack a number of fundamental features and are often faulty in displaying information, this has frustrated iOS users. Talking about this issue, Google’s chairman, Eric Schmidt, says that Apple should have continued using Google Maps.

Eric Schmidt

Schmidt was speaking about the general contest between Android and Apple in a recent talk. He cited this contest between the two platforms to be something that is defining the industry right now.

According to him, “The Android-Apple platform fight is the defining contest. Here’s why: Apple has thousands of developers building for it. Google’s platform, Android, is even larger. Four times more Android phones than Apple phones. 500 million phones already in use. Doing 1.3 million activations a day. We’ll be at 1 billion mobile devices in a year.”

He goes on to talk about Apple’s move to quit on Google Maps, saying that Apple has been doing pretty well with the use of Google Maps and the company shouldn’t have dumped them. He is asked if Google has any plans of launching its Maps for iOS.

To this, Schmidt says, “Don’t want to pre-announce products, but if we made one, they would have to approve it. They haven’t approved all of our apps in the past.”

Schmidt has served on Apple’s board of directors in the past and when asked which among Facebook, Amazon and Apple would be prefer if he was to become CEO of one them, Schmidt says he’d go for Apple. Watch the video below to listen to the entire talk:
