iTunes: Apple Censors The Word Jailbreak

You may have often seen that words with offensive connotations or related to obscenity are presented with a lot of asterisks so that they are not fully visible. This is often in many formal platforms. However, does ‘jailbreak’ also fall under the same category and should receive the same treatment? Apple sure thinks so.

Naturally, Apple is not quite fond of the jailbreaking community or the tools. These tools enable the users to circumvent numerous limitations that Apple likes to put on its devices. With the help of jailbreak, users are then able to enjoy a whole plethora of non-Apple tools and applications.

Although Apple can’t do much about this, it keeps updating its firmware versions so that jailbreakers have to invent newer and better methods to circumvent these updates. Apple has also been taking a stricter approach to jailbreaking-related tools in its iTunes Store. Some of these tools or apps are simply not approved by Apple.

Now, Apple has found yet another novel way to discourage the users from downloading these tools. This has been done by making jailbreak appear as j*******k in the iTunes Store. Naturally, for an average user, this may cause suspicion and the user may be thwarted from downloading that particular app.

However, such users who have been avid jailbreakers for their Apple devices and continue to stick to jailbroken devices will essentially continue using jailbreaking tools, even if Apple has taken such measures.

Update: Apparently, either the step had been taken by mistake or Apple has realized, after an online discussion ensued on the social media about this issue, that implementing such a policy was not a great idea. The result is that Apple is slowly backtracking the changes so that jailbreak no longer will be a censored word on iTunes Store.
