Many Top Tech Companies Are Not Based In Silicon Valley

Silicon Valley has come to be synonymous with the headquarters of the best companies in the tech world. But Fortune’s list of top 100 companies to work for shows that many top tech companies are based elsewhere.

Fortune 100 tech list

There is no doubt that Silicon Valley does host the largest number of tech companies. Not only that, the largest number of top tech companies are also based in the area. In Fortune’s list of top 100 companies, 19 are related to technology. Of these, 11 are based in Silicon Valley.

The 11 companies based in Silicon Valley that have made the cut include Google, Genentech, Salesforce, Intuit, Qualcomm, NetApp, Cisco, Autodesk, Adobe Systems, Intel and Hitachi Data Systems. However, there are another 8 companies in the list that hail from other parts of the U.S.

SAS, for instance, is based in North Carolina. Ultimate Software has Florida as its home base while Rackspace Hosting is based out of Texas. World Wide Technology, another company among Fortune’s top 100, is from Missouri while Zappos is based in Nevada. Microsoft, another giant of the tech industry, has its headquarter at Washington.

The list essentially shows that if you are looking to work for one of the best companies in the tech world, you don’t necessarily have to be in the Silicon Valley. With a rapid rise in the number of tech startups and companies in recent years, an increasingly greater number of founders are opting for other states and regions which are more affordable or more strategically feasible. In a way, this has led to a territorial decentralization of the tech world.
