Motorola May Offer $50 Smartphones In The Future

Motorola recently took the smartphone industry by a storm when it unveiled its $179 Moto G smartphone. The company’s CEO Dennis Woodside says that Motorola may soon push for ever cheaper smartphones in the future.

Offering a smartphone priced at $179 is not exactly a big deal. But offering a smartphone at this price while also packing a 4.5-inch display and a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, though, is a huge achievement. The smartphone probably offers the best price value today and may establish Motorola as a known and popular brand in the emerging markets. However, when it comes to emerging markets, even $179 is a steep price tag for many. Buying power is a lot lower than that in many countries and Motorola aims to address that in the future.

In a recent interview, Woodside shared his thoughts about this, “In much of the world $179 is a lot of money so there’s a big market at a price point of less than $179. We’re going to look at that and just delivering on that value promise is super important. I mean why can’t these devices be $50? There’s no reason that can’t happen so we’re going to push that.”

Of course he didn’t offer any concrete details as to whether or not his company is actually working on such low-priced handsets. But given Motorola’s focus on emerging markets, that seems very probable. On the premium side too, Woodside says, Motorola will be offering more handsets and customization options in the future. According to him, “Today you have colours and beginning of materials but you don’t have screen size and you don’t have functionality and we’re going to bring all that in the next year or so.”
