Turning The ‘Internet Of Things’ Into A Reality

Internet of things is a notion that even the tiniest objects that are present within a given range, are connected to the internet and so, each of these objects can be manipulated through internet. Taylor Alexander has undertaken the task of turning this futuristic notion into a reality.

It all started when Alexander had to lift a nuclear cooling tower with the help of high-strength steel cables. He needed an application that could effectively control the sensors at the end of cables. So after dismissing an expensive app that he had purchased, he set down to write an app of his own.

Along the way, he realized that the standard long-distance wireless protocol, Zigbee, is not very effective and there ought to be a better alternative. As a result, Alexander launched Flutter, which is an alternate technology 100 times as effective as Wi-Fi when it comes to connectivity and has a range of 3200 feet.

Another problem with Zigbee is that it makes use of such devices which are not open-source. Flutter, on the other hand, relies heavily on open-sources devices, which makes it all the more interesting. According to Taylor, “I think the internet of things is not going to start with products, but projects.”

Ultimately, Taylor says, the goal is to create a system that can easily connect to the tiniest of objects with ease and at great speeds, and at the same time consumes far less power than an average Wi-Fi. It is safe to assume that it will take Flutter a long while to reach there, although this project may turn out to be the future of our computing world.
