OLED Technology Coming To Window, Wall And Furniture!

When we wake up at night in a dark room, we usually at first switch on bedside or ceiling lamp. But imagine instead of switching on bedside or ceiling lamp, you’re switching on the window. You might be thinking it is science fiction. Yes, at present it is a fiction, but in near future, it will be real. Dietmar Thomas of Philips Lumiblade is making a film where he is showing how OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) technology can be used in windows, walls and even in furniture.

OLEDs generate light when electricity is passed through layers of organic semiconductor material mounted on glass. This technology is improving rapidly. Dietmar Thomas and his team of Philips Lumiblade were invited to make a film about OLED technology and its future uses. Thomas has shared some ideas of OLED technology and its future uses to Dezeen at the Lumiblade Creative Lab (Lumiblade is the brand name of Philips’ OLED lighting products and the Lumiblade Creative Lab is used to introduce designers to OLEDs and help them develop innovative uses for the technology) in Aachen, Germany.

Thomas has said that in this film we’ll see a glowing windows that will also be made based on OLED technology. It will replace light bulbs. How? Because there will be transparent OLEDs that will be integrated in windows. This OLED integrated windows will catch the sun light during day and at night it will lit up.

That’s not all. We will see glowing walls and glowing furniture integrated with OLED technology. OLED technology mixed paint will be anointed onto walls. So the whole wall lights up while applying a current.

Thomas predicted that in the near future, say within five or ten years or so, OLED technology will be less than a millimeter thin and up to a meter square and everyone will be able to buy OLED systems at IKEA as it will be very cheap. Thomas also added, other future uses for OLEDs include in cars, where their thinness compared to LED technology will allow car designers to provide more internal space or design shorter vehicles.

You will get some details about OLED technology from Philips Lumiblade in Dezeen. For now, have a look at the video describing OLED technology and its future uses.
