Protein Emerged From Human Body Creating Flexible And Biodegradable Transistors

Researchers from Tel Aviv University (TAU) have created a transistor which is made from one of the organic materials ‘Protein’: found in the human body. They collected the protein from breast milk, mucus and blood. The scientists have created totally silicon free, flexible and biodegradable transistors by using the proteins. Their target is not only to create transistors but also to produce more electronic devices by using human emerged Proteins.

The TAU researchers found, by applying various combinations of blood, milk, and mucus proteins to any base material, the molecules assemble themselves to create a semi-conducting film on a nano-scale. By blending the 3 different kinds of proteins in different proportions, the team has successfully built 4 nano-meter high layer but this layer can be built up to 18 nano-meter high. These proteins make a complete biological circuit with electronic and optical capabilities. Blood protein is capable of absorbing oxygen, which allows to manipulate with other chemicals for different technological properties. Milk forms fibers which construct the structure of the transistor and Mucus has the ability to keep red, blue, and green fluorescent dyes separate, which together are capable of creating the white light for optical work when necessary.

As the biological circuits are biodegradable, so it can be recycled and the bio-compatibility can be improved. Keeping the word ‘biodegradable’ in mind, scientists are planning to create more flexible technologies like screens, cell phones and tablets, biosensors and microprocessor chips.
