What Start-Ups Should Learn From Linux?

Linux is computer operating system which has been assembled under the model of free and open source software development and distribution. What makes Linux special in the world of OS is the Linux kernel. Linux can be sported by various devices, including mobile phones, tablets, desktops and even television sets. The interesting aspect of Linux is that is works somehow similar to Wikipedia. Everybody in the world can contribute to it, transforming it into a truly successful project. Might those willing to try and build a new OS from scratch learn something from Linux?

Of course they might. First off, even if newcomers should stay away at least at first from designing their project in public, they could certainly make use of the available free software projects to get a prospective on their own work. Bearing that in mind, interesting technology who manages to boost the project but it’s not crucial to the overall success of the result should be released into the wild world in order to help other free software developers. Big companies are doing it. Facebook is. So are LinkedIn and Google. It’s the key to building something interesting and big.

Free Software seems to be the answer to future developers. Ubuntu’s Technical Architect Allison Randal says so and apparently Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of the Linux Foundation agrees. New comers to the world of OS design should listen to him. “Free your technology and see it spread and do things you never even imagined were possible.

Even if, back when it started Linux attracted a lot of haters, most of its opponents back then are now active contributors to the Linux kernel. Zemil also gives startups a valuable lesson of how to make it big. The idea is to do it out of passion not because of money, and secondly to maintain the hacker way. Only then will the money flow.
