“LOL” (the acronym for Laughing Out Loud) is one of the most used phrases by netizens. Where can’t you find it? Millions of tweets, statuses and comments use this expression everyday. But, using this expression has turned costly for 18-year old Paula Asher. She has sentenced to jail as a consequence of using “lol” on Facebook.
On July 20, Paula Asher slammed into a car in Woodford County, Kentucky, while driving under the influence (DUI) (in other words, she was drunk). Four teenagers were inside the car that she hit. She quickly left the spot and later she wrote in her Facebook page the following status message regarding the incident.
“My dumb a** got a DUI and hit a car LOL”
Parents of those teens saw the comment of Paula Asher and they didn’t find it funny at all. So, they contacted a local judge and brought four charges against her including leaving the scene of accident, driving under influence of alcohol, and possession of a controlled substance. Police presented her in front of court and the court ordered Paula Asher to delete her Facebook page due to writing the word LOL for that incident and let her go.
But Asher didn’t take it seriously. Rather she thought that the judge was joking. Later the judge came to know that Asher’s Facebook page was still active. So Asher was presented in front of judge Mary Jane Phelps again on August 28. Again Phelps ordered Asher to shut down her Facebook page, but she instantly replied that she wouldn’t do that. Therefore without any delay, judge Mary Jane Phelps ordered to sent her to jail for 48 hours for contempt of court.
After the issued order, Asher said, “I didn’t think LOL would put me in jail. I apologize to everybody. I apologize to the judge. I didn’t mean to hurt anybody.”

So, she was punished for contempt of the judge’s orders and not just for writing the word, “LOL?” Good. LOL.
On what basis Judge would send her to jail except for contempt of court? For writing LOL in fb? Huh! No Way… LOL….
What kind of order the judge gave? On what basis? If court says someone to put off his/her dress and the person denies, would that be under contempt of court? LOL!
That ignorant girl should have gotten a LOT longer stay in jail. And she should have had her license revoked. I’m sick of stupid people getting away with behavior like that. We need to start throwing the book at offenders. And if I’d been her parent I’d have given her a good smack across the mouth for back-talking the judge. Idiot.
isn’t hit-and-run punishable by law? let alone DUI??? how come she was only ordered to delete her fb page and let go???
Exactly. Why it’s only about writing a wall post in Facebook, Hit and run and driving under influence is serious crime. She probably got caught because of that FB statement.
